shooting at people while heading to his grandmother's house. he barricaded himself into an apartment in hayward beginning and hours-long standoff. we pick up this story from the police department with julia. >> reporter: this suspect is involved in a number of crimes. he shot at a prostitute last night and then at a trucker on a highway. then he had at his grandmothers house. when the standout started at 11:00 p.m., the suspect . it himself inside his apartment with eight other people inside . it up -- belongs to his grandmother. five hours, seven people were released unharmed but these suspect ended elderly bedridden man stayed inside. >> this situation was very difficult with regards to the fact that there was an elderly

man who was bed stricken. that took away many tactics that we could use to try to get the suspect to surrender. >> reporter: they say the suspect is connected to a string of shootings. last night police say he shot at a prostitute and oakland and then at a trucker. the suspect is linked to another shooting a few weeks ago. >> we were familiar with his individual due to prior gain contact dana -- gang contact. >> reporter: this morning, the suspect surrendered with his hands up. after being handcuffed, police went inside and found a modified high powered rifle and handgun. four hours some neighbors had to stay out. >> i went to drop off my girls

and i can get back in and go to work. >> reporter: the suspect is in police custody. his name has not been released because witnesses and the victim who was shot still need to identify him in a police lineup. terrifying moments for passage eyes -- passengers on a flight. there was a mechanical issue with an engine. the plane circled the coast for more than one hour to burn off field before landing . it left just after 11:30 a.m. bound for tokyo. minutes after takeoff, reports that one of the engines burst into flames . it safely landed two hours later at sfo. >> we have to showed an engine down. we need to don't fuel. we will return to san francisco. >> all 200 passengers have been

put on a new playing. united is still investigating what went wrong with this engine. two crews are working to repair some downed power lines after eight tree came down on top of them just after noon today along hillview drive and loss altos. about 70 people in the area are still without power . it crashed on top of this truck . a man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. still no word on what caused the tree to come down. right now is day six of the search for two escaped inmates. one who broke out last week may have been cited in gilroy. devin fehely has more. >> reporter: deputies for the santa clara office say the days in motel and gilroy has been searched for and escaped inmate

burglary and extortion. that case goes back to early 2015. chaos and confusion on the campus of ohio state university when a student armed with a knife plowed into the crowd. the attacker was gunned down by police but at least 11 other people were injured. >> reporter: it was a chaotic morning and it is a somber evening as a vigil has gathered members of this community together after a terrifying morning. authorities identified the man behind the attack at ohio state university is a student, abdul ali artan . police say the 18- year-old drove his car over a curb and into a crowd of pedestrians monday morning, then jumped out of the car and

began stabbing victims with a butcher knife. >> this happened at 9:50 2 am. a few seconds later, and officer called saying there was a man with a knife. >> reporter: a university police officer immediately took action, shooting and killing abdul ali artan just one minute after the attack began. >> the officer and gauge the suspect and fired shots and use deadly force to stop the threat. >> reporter: one student was nearby on his way to class when the car in the curb. >> i heard it and saw everyone running. and then gunshots rang out and i ran. >> reporter: 11 people were injured and one include someone in critical condition. students and professors are included. this was supposed to be the first semester for abdul

ali artan at osu. authorities are looking into whether this may have been an act of terrorism. abdul ali artan told others that he felt scared to pray in public on his first day at school because of what he described his mistreatment of muslims in the media. >> what do we know about the attacker? was he alone or? did he have friends on campus?>> reporter: at this point, we don't know that much about abdul ali artan . we believe he transferred from a community college this fall so he would've only been here a few months. the fbi has told cbs news that through social media, they have found at least a recent post where abdul ali artan said he was mad about the mixed treatment of muslims everywhere . back to from columbus, ohio. president-elect donald trump interviewed more

caused him the popular vote. today michigan certified its results making trump the winner and 16 electoral votes. trump is the first republican president nominee to win michigan since 1988. a group in california is calling for a voter recount in california and five other states . the california association of voting officials held a press conference this morning. they say voting machines in several states were vulnerable to software acting. the group says they have gathered enough evidence to call for a recount. they are also calling for the government to replace the current voting machine system. a nine day period of mourning is underway in cuba for former president fidel castro. many cuban exiles in the united

and reached for his waistband. the security man then shot the man several times . it turns out the man was unarmed. he was taken to the hospital and treated and arrested for making felony threats. two -- threats. two men were killed today near the part station. a policeman who was hit in the head with a skateboard in south san francisco is now showing signs of recovery but he is still in critical condition tonight. this happened on thanksgiving afternoon. several officers tried to subdue a man who was acting aggressively. the suspect first tried to get away and then he allegedly hit the officer with it knocking him unconscious. other officers caught up to the suspect and arrested him. he is being held on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon now. there is a discussion bring
